Scot Walker’s Poor Tax

In Wisconsin, not having a car means your employment opportunities are already limited, so when Scott Walker decided he was going to raise bus fares it was a slap in the face to an already struggling group.

Bus fares are going up 23%. Yes, it’s true that gas prices have risen but it’s also true that just two years ago, the unemployment rate among African-American males in Milwaukee’s central city was estimated at 70%. Although the economy has improved somewhat, Walker has made it more difficult for everyone looking for a job or for that matter, trying to keep one.

Walker makes a lot of noise about being pro-economy and pro-business. I wonder what the MMAC (Metropolitican Milwaukee Association of Commerce) has to say about this? Their President, Tim Sheehy is usually a dependable Walker supporter. I wonder how he feels about raising the bus fares that will make it more difficult for businesses that are barely surviving with low-wage employees? Clearly it will increase the amount of employees who can’t get to work.
