Accountability: LEGISLATURE SHOULD ALLOW COUNTIES CONTROL OVER THEIR OWN BOARDS
Stagnation and a cancerous void of leadership has infected the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors and it’s no surprise several Supervisors are looking for an amputation.
County Board Chairman Lee Holloway has had to deal with ethics charges and while we believe in due process and Chairman Holloway’s right to fight these charges, Holloway needs to understand that residents of Milwaukee County deserve to see some leadership from the Chairman.
Holloway deserves his day in court, but the effectiveness of the Board has ground to a halt as Holloway dodges bullets and accusations which are only bolstered by his lack of presence down at the courthouse.
That’s why the State Legislature should act to allow Supervisors to replace their Chairman by a simple majority vote.
Republican strategists have got to be gleefully watching the Milwaukee County Board saga as Supervisors find their hands tied by Holloway’s ineffectiveness. No longer can the GOP say they support accountability as they’ve done nothing to allow the board to remove Holloway.
Democratic legislators should propose a bill that would allow these changes. If Republicans oppose the bill, Democrats should point to them as being all talk and no action.
Accountability needs to be the new buzz word in Dem circles. Congressional Dems seem to be getting it, why aren’t our State Dems? If our State legislators they miss this opportunity, they’ll have to wait for the 2008 elections if they hope to regain either the Assembly or the State Senate.
