Blogs and online media provides readers increased insight as newspaper subscriptions fizzle: Highlighting the Spice Boys

This is rich — the Spice Boys have appointed themselves to police the blogosphere.

Cary Spivak and Dan Bice trudge through the scores of local political blogs so you don’t have to. Here’s a peek at the good, the not-so-good, the truly offensive or the just sort of interesting.”

Amazing isn’t it?

Here’s an idea for for them — how about policing politics instead of blogs? How about they actually try to report a bit more of the news? You know, some of the stories that Watchdog Milwaukee and other blogs have been breaking that members of the JS knew about — things like the Scott Walker Bell Therapy pay for play scandal, the Walker sales tax scandal or how Walker collected donations for Katrina victims but they sat in County storage long after most of the southern shelters closed — you know, little things like these unfolding scandals that will affect peoples pocketbooks for years to come.

Truth be told, I usually enjoy the rantings and occasional insight of columnists Cary Spivak & Dan Bice. They do some cutting edge stuff but occasionally they drop the hard edged reporting and focus on nuances and personalities. This is not to say a columnist should not have fun, but when they have the opportunity to use their keyboards for good, it seems like a waste for them to squander the opportunity.

Now I can see them sitting around the backyard bonfire tossin’ back a few cold ones and joking about who’s doin’ who in office. Or firing up a Romeo y Julieta churchill with a dram of Lagavulin at a poker game with good friends.

The Spice boys are probably really nice guys but their back handed whack at blogs makes them look a little pathetic. It’s a bit like Goliath whining that he didn’t want to go up against big bad David.

I don’t know that we can expect a great deal of insight from the Spiceblog. After all, their first blog entry included a link to a “truly offensive” picture of poo from a blog entry called “Why Won’t the Mainstream Media Cover My Turd? ” This is not to say that the Spice boys minds are always in the toilet but if they would wipe that one out of their blog, I don’t think anybody would mourn. Some stories just need to be flushed.

We’re hopeful that the Spice Boys get back to doing some real reporting rather than aspiring to be the sphincter of the blogosphere.

Update: Since this blog was originally drafted, the Spice Boys have picked it up a bit and have touched on a few issues. Time will tell if their blog is bandwidth worthy.

Good take. I think some of their perceived defensiveness comes from their lack of understanding about blogs. it’s the “in thing” to disparage blogs among the traditional media, regardless of knowing what function they serve, which isn’t the be-all-end-all, but a conduit for sharing information faster. They see conservatives whining about media’s liberal bias and then see actual liberals complain that they aren’t covering stories accurately (which is true) and just assume both sides hate them equally and for the same reason. Hopefully they’ll discern the difference.
