Building Inspection Headache
As you know, earlier this week I bought the cabinets. Just telling the building inspector I’m putting in cabinets and rearranging the layout of my kitchen is not enough in Brown Deer. They want schematics and they want them at a 1/4″ = 1′ ratio. I know it’s all for the best, but it’s just a touch frustrating now.
After some work, Lowe’s was able to figure out how to do this but I now have to go back to the building inspector to get approval of the plan before anything happens. In the mean time, it’s emptying out cabinets and moving things out of the rooms.

Jim,
The building inspector is strict, but it’s for a good reason. Every time we have a hard rain, we bless Mr. Premo for making the builder put a stronger sump pump in our basement.
I didn’t mean to infer that Premo is anything but an asset to Brown Deer. In fact, quite the opposite — I think Bob Premo is great.
I’ve had a ton of contractors try to convince me to do my project without permits but I rejected all of them.
Premo gave me some fantastic advice a few years ago with regards to a wood burning stove in the basement. I unfortunately chose to not follow his advice and I’ve regretted it. But the advice and direction he did provide as invaluable and well worth the permit fees we laid out.
