Ah yes, just keep raising taxes to fund everything. Brilliant! How dare Walker try and save the county money instead of throwing his hands in the air and saddling the tax-paying public with even more taxes on top of fees raised by the city, state, etc.

Instead of telling private citizens how they should live and go about their daily lives, why don't you voluntarily give the county more of your money since you feel that you're being taxed so little?

As I have always said, liberals are best at spending other people's money...and your post illustrates that perfectly.

Come on Jim, you're kidding me right?

"Unlike Barrett who also faced mounting problems with pension investments adversely affected by the stock market, Walker has chosen the path of Nero — fiddling as Rome burned."

You're comparing what Walker inherited, thanks to a corrupt Board of Supervisors, to the ebb and flow of the stock market where the city invests its pension plan? That's like comparing apples and bean-bag chairs. Barrett did not inherit a pension and budget situation that was brought on by people who were corrupt and removed from office.

And to say that Barrett has Milwaukee "financially strong" without massive tax increases is laughable. So tax increases of almost any size are fine with you, just not "massive." Wow, I wish I had your income where I could say things like that.

I had the chance or really the misfortune of tuning into Sunday Insight with Charlie Sykes on WTMJ channel 4 in Milwaukee the last couple of weeks. It is clear that Mr. Sykes’ TV program is a continuation of his radio broadcast with opinionated and highly bias commentary that is smartly disguised particularly to the TV viewers as indisputable facts. Why doesn't TMJ4 just simply hang a GOP banner behind Sykes? While I am somewhat kidding with that last point, I really don’t personally have any quandary with Mr. Sykes obvious and personal party affiliation. Hence, the political star, Paul Ryan cheerleading event in the February 7, 2010 TV broadcast on that morning’s program. However, I do have a problem with Mr. Sykes presenting his misinformation of personal commentary and GOP talking points as fact, but more exasperating is TMJ4 endorsing Sykes’ observations by airing this program without qualification. With Sykes constant cutting off his guests that oppose his assertions, as well as the lack of serious guest panelists with opposing views on Sykes’ agenda. In addition, the gross lack of fact checking of Sykes’ ranting is insulting. It just appears extremely disingenuous on the part of TMJ4 allowing a single individual’s obvious and personal agenda, as well as Sykes’ need for personal self-gratification in this highly visible format to go unchecked. Still, what is more offensive and outrageous that this Sunday Insight program is attempting to manipulate an audience with lowbrow commentary and mainstream GOP talking points masquerading as real local news or real informative political talk show. So that is why I am not at all surprised by the misleading antics of Charlie Sykes trying to fool the general public as a sensible individual with high standards.

Scott Walker is subjecting county workers to 22 furlough days in 2010, resulting in up to $5,000.00 reduction in wages per workers and subsequently laying them off. He is replacing the laid off workers with contractors who don't live in Milwaukee County and who work for companies from outside of Wisconsin resulting in a reduction to our tax base and destroying the lives of people who are committed to living and working in Milwaukee.

After this brilliant plan of his, we will still have a budget deficit of 10 million from the original 23 million projected for 2010. All this while violating labor contracts and not bargaining in good faith, diminishing county services and the quality of life in Milwaukee County. He is sending money out of the state to companies with no sense of ownership to Milwaukee County.

His message to county workers:

Go home and tell your wife/husband and kids that you got laid off and replaced by someone who works for a company outside of Wisconsin.
Notify the bank that you can't make your house payment (or landlord).
Stop contributing to Milwaukee county's tax base.
File for bankruptcy
File for unemployment and then W2 assistance
Moved to Madison and hope that you are one of the lucky 250,000 persons who will get a job from Governor Scott walker's job creation program ---Scott Walker as a demagogue

OR

Raise the tax levy for property taxes resulting in a $60.00 increase per household a year based on a $200,000 home, no layoffs, restored services, a balance budget and hopefully when the economy turns around, a surplus and tax rebate to the tax payers ---Scott Walker as a problem solver

Some tips for home owners in Milwaukee County to come up with the $60.00 to balance the 2010 or 2011 budget.

Give up Starbucks for 10 days.

Cut back to a carton of cigarettes for a week (prevents emphysema when older, no oxygen tank, reduce health care costs for everyone else)

Stay home for one night instead of drinking out.

Stay home and have a family home cooked dinner (1 night only).

Stop contributing to Scott Walker's campaign fund

Stop paying your Citizen for Responsible Government membership

Save your gas money wasted on attending the CRG meetings

"I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. . . . corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed."

Global warming is real; it doesn't matter who says it. Chris Thomas; mkelover- JOE MCCARTHY IS DEAD- will you quit voting for him? And get off your bellies while you're begging for tax-cuts for rich people that hate you. Jeez.

Denise, Altoon, Unsilent Majority and RDinMKE,
You can't even begin to imagine how many people feel the exact same way about Tony Zielinski - including many business owners in his district. People are tired of the shakedowns and scare tactics, and they're ready to speak out.

This guy has to go. He's playing in the big leagues now...and his shady activities are going to get big league scrutiny. If you or or anyone wants to join us in exposing Tony Zielinski for the fraud that he is, please email fedupwithtonyz@hotmail.com. Enough is enough.

Denise-even that is not an original idea by Z. I think having him as far away from #14 is a good thing. As Lt. Gov. he'll have SO many more watchdog groups peering over his shoulder and watching his every move. He won't get away with the same garbage he gets away with here. He runs his district like he's some pseudo-mob boss. You wouldn't believe how many bar owners are afraid to say anything against him for fear that it will get back to him and they'll lose their licenses. (?!?!?) They don't realize that he doesn't have 1/4 of the power that he thinks he has. Tragically ridiculous...that's what he is.

First, Limbaugh is a conservative, not a republican. Secondly, Feingold is hardly a maverick--unless passing unconstitutional legislation counts. If Feinglod were a maverick, he would have demanded Wisconsin get the same sweet deals on health care that Florida and Nebraska got. Feingold is Pelosi's lapdog, nobody's senator but Nebraska's

You've been tough on expulsion before. I've always agreed.

Breaking down the school district into much smaller units lowere the policital threshold. Perhaps it would allow schools to try things which they would not in a one size fits all model like MPS.

Having the Mayor appoint the Superintendent is just one part of the solution puzzle.

I've got to say, I'm a little shocked that we actually agree on the expulsion issue. I've written about it in the past. As for size, I would like it broken up into regional districts -- none any larger than a part of town. For instance, maybe we could have the Northwest Milwaukee School District, Northside school district and Southwest School district.

Giving the Mayor control over the schools is not a reform. It is just a change in the leadership structure. So the mayor appoints a new super. Wow. Who cares. The problem with MPS is its size. More meaningful than mayoral control would be breaking the district down into much smaller--one high school districts. Another meaningful reform would be to allow true expulsion where school districts are not forced to pay for one school or another to "tolerate" severe discipline problems, most schools have already wasted thousands of hours and efforts on students who are discipline problems. Let expelled students put on orange jackets and pick up trash, shovel in the winter or whatever.

As for Barrett, don't be so sure he would benefit if this legislation were defeated. How many charter schools has he proposed for MPS with his authority to do so--none. Where has his voice been on the MPS catastrophe for the last four years--nowhere. Sounds like Jonny-come-lately looking for an issue. I imagine he has no clue about what he would do given the chance.

Catholics are supposed to live their lives as Jesus did.

When Archbishops like Burke refuse both communion and baptism because of a belief in ones right to abortion, yet he patently accepts the actions of legislators who oppose support for the poor and who choose instead to support war, he betrays his faith as well as the legacy of Jesus.

Funny how some "right to LIFE" people only believe that's true for the unborn, but not for the born. Do the Swiss Guards at the gates to the Vatican City go unarmed? Or, will they kill someone who tries to enter without permission?

Pacifism is TRUE Christianity. Anything else is giving into our animal instinct. ALL killing of humans is murder. There is a reasonable debate about when a fertilized human egg becomes a human, is it at conception, at "viability", or somewhere in between? There is NO debate about someone who is born being human... and yet many are willing to kill, even the Church. Anyone who calls them selves "Pro Life" and is in favor of the death penalty is guilty of bearing false witness against themselves.

Besides, if we executed all the pedophiles, who would forgive our sins every Sunday?

Jimmy,

If you want to be a member of a church, then you should do your level best to live up to it's creed.

Like it or not, Catholics may believe that handing out government money to everyone makes the world better. I would disagree with that, and I can still have the Sacrament.

But, if you want to start picking fights about the elemental and fundemental right - to LIFE - and you have gone beyond opinion.

Then you have to move on and find one of countless churches that couldn't care less about life.

You could even become part of a religion that isn't one at all like the Unitarian trash bin.

Your actions have ramifications. Live with them.

Unfortunately,

Tony Zielinski has no idea how to run a political campaign for statewide office. He to date has no official campaign, his website is rather ridiculous, and he has a video that has the background of the starship enterprise. Politics is normally littered with goofballs like Zielinski who are intent to screw people over to gain any type of foothold.

Thank God this wackjob has no chance.

If you don`t pay n his district you don`t play.

The pension fund borrowing really needs to be looked into further, because it is a clear case of borrowing today to avoid making the hard choices which will force tax increases once Walker leaves office.

So to you health insurance should be free, or practically free, and available at any moment, including someone who doesn't get coverage but then decides they need it once they have something happen to them (i.e. a broken nose)?

They had the same issue and the mannequins were pulled for being too sexy! It's a store that is for males more then females and I dont understand freaking out over fiberglas. Maybe they would have been better off hiring real people to walk around half naked instead?

just a comment on "what happened on the Grand Banks"
It may be crazy, but I really think that it was the again the zebra mussels that destroyed the downstream Saint Laurent fishin'
I did write it up in "Canadian Fishing at the Grand Banks, Zebra Mussels, and Iron's Effect on Plankton".
But I guess my title is not clear enough.
I hope things improve for fishing on Wisconsin lakes.

Come on Jim, she's too afraid to return to the private sector? Great. We have someone representing tax-paying citizens who is more concerned about keeping a job than representing the views of those who voted her into office. What a great person she is.

BTW - her returning to nursing wouldn't be that tough, do you realize that the medical profession is a field that is growing now and has been for a while? That is, of course, until Obama socializes medicine and hospitals stop hiring new staff, but I digress...

Looks like County Executive Scott Walker is having a difficult time hiding the funding he claims is causing furloughs and layoffs at Milwaukee county government. Amazing what can happen when the question: "Can you show us the figures?" is asked! Two scheduled furlough days have been cancelled because of miscalculations by the county Executive's Office. All of the sudden, money that was short is popping up from nowhere! People! He is just looking to enhance his agenda for the governorship's position. He wants to claim that he reduced goverment spending, that he downsized by laying off and balanced the budget by making tough decisions and outsourcing to companies outside of the state of wisconsin. If he becomes governor, how many jobs will he eliminate in Wisconsin by outsourcing to outside companies and abroad?

If he becomes governor, how many jobs will he eliminate in Wisconsin by outsourcing to outside companies and abroad?

Cruelty does have a faith. The fact that several CATHOLIC priests abused children was never in doubt. Who would have said we should ignore the CATHOLIC part?

But Islam surely is a religion of cruelty as it is practiced in many parts of the world today. They posted the execution of Daniel Pearl on the internet. They dragged the bodies of our servicemen through the streets od Morgudishu and Filuja. Hasan told us all that "god is Great!" before he opened fire.

While it sounds great to spout crap like "ignorance imparts no wisdom" (whatever that means), apathy and willing blindness have always caused more destruction in our world.

Until Islam gets its house in order, it is hard to honestly look at it without disdain.

Timothy McVeigh did not kill anybody at the urging of his Catholic Priest. The good Major did have the wink/nod from his Imam though. You ignore that connection at the nations peril.... in fact, ignoring that connection is what allowed this evil to fester. We were so tolerant of his religion that we let him commit mass murder on it's behalf. Uber-liberal General Casey said "As great a tragedy as this was, it would be a shame if our diversity became a casualty as well". It was his irrational support of diversity that led to the death in the first place. Ignoring evil is not diversity, it's insanity.

As far as I go, if some psychopathic zealot told me that they were going to start killing liberal bloggers in the name of religion, I'd go ahead and lock them in a deep dark cell... how about you?

OMG... we won't have a county farm and fish hatchery? Show me any successful city or county that doesn't own a farm or fish hatchery. How will we ever attract businesses and jobs without a government fish hatchery???

The farm and fish hatchery were so successful in reducing costs that they only added $330,000 to the budget. The hatchery claims to have produced 40,000 fish. A feeder goldfish at Walmart sells for about ten cents. Ok, so there is $4000. Where did the rest of that money go? Let's upgrade that to stocking crappies and bass, say 5"-7", nice size stock. Okay, they cost more. About $1.25 each. So, we have $50,000. The farm only produces seasonal goods. Let's use math again. 80lbs of ear corn to a bushel at 3.25 a bushel. We spent $50k on fish leaving $280k. That means we could buy 7.5 million pounds of corn in bulk. Do we make that much? Not even 5% of that. Clearly a HUGE waste.

Now, some will whine that the food goes to food pantries. Lovely, but when did we decide that it was the job of taxpayers to stock food pantries? It's not. They are charities, not entitlement. There are already state programs that provide food aid.

Job training? Are you serious? Yes, I'm sure that plenty of former inmate go on to lead productive lives as farmers after they are incarcerated. Please show me one... anyone? I'm sure the former low level crooks and drunks can't wait to buy a tractor... Green Acres is the place for meeee...

Why on earth are taxpayers being bilked to run a farm and fish hatchery. You want fish? Buy em cheap from a local business. You want corn and cabbages? Buy em from a local farm. Both would help out the county more than this ridiculous farce.

Comment on Predator Fish, Zebra Mussels & Baitfish Explosion to Blame for Poor Fishing by Nick Cipollone

Thanks for the story. There's been a lot of speculation as to why lake Michigan shore fishing was so poor this year, & this article offers some plausible reasons. It's always fun to blame Illinois, & perch fishermen were doing that a lot this year, not without cause: unlike WI, IL lets people fish perch during the spawn, & allows them a 15 fish bag, triple ours. Of course, poor IL gamefish resource management isn't responsible for poor perch weather, or quagga mussels, but still.

Some things about the article I take issue with, tho: Musky hasn't historically been a major trophy draw in Wisconsin? Which planet does THAT Wisconsin exist in? Anyhow, most Musky fisherman practice catch & release with all but the most extreme trophy Muskies (taxidermy is expensive, I mean, beaucoup $), & Esox is a very tough fish that has a very high catch & release survival rate, so most caught Muskies aren't removed from the food chain. Numerous and undersized panfish populations can be a sign of a poor predator population in a lake; perhaps the DNR has been over-correcting.

As for Lake Michigan Salmon re-production; there ain't none, never has been, never will be. The DNR stocks Brown & Steelhead trout, & Coho & Chinook Salmon. There may be some re-production of the stocked trout species, but not among the salmon. Salmon not only require upstream gravel beds to lay their eggs in, they also require extensive rivermouth estuaries for the smolt to grow in before they change to their open water phase. Local rivers offer little of the first, & none of the second. I shouldn't nitpick; you're main point about filter feeders keeping the baitfish populations down seems right.

As for the cell-phone thesis, I wouldn't rule it out. Some friends of mine, who live on Wind Lake, STILL spit when the Milwaukee Journal sports page fishing report is mentioned. Some sportswriter, trolling the local gin mills for tips, got one from a local woman who couldn't keep her mouth shut. Next Sunday, nine words; "The Bluegills are biting in the Wind Lake bayou." It took the spawning beds five years to recover from that Sunday afternoon. So, re the cell phones, it wouldn't be the first time fishermen used mass communication & technological ingenuity to crash a fishery. Come to think of it, that's what happened on the Grand Banks, & a lot of other places.

Suggestion for a future article- what would be the effect on the lake fishery if, as now seems likely, the Asian Carp break out of the Chicago River?

And a tip: try the KO Wobbler- it's the only lure that caught me any salmon this year.
