It would be a good idea for all of us to become pension experts and start looking at Walker's plans for the state of Wisconsin Investment Board (SWIB) and the $67 billion (yes, billion!) in pension assets that SWIB manages.

Walker's biggest Wisconsin campaign contributors happen to have been the executives at Heartland Advisors, a financial services firm in Milwaukee that ten years ago had some rather interesting dealings with both SWIB and the Securities Exchange Commission over fraudulent pricing of municipal bond funds and an alleged "sham sale of bonds" to SWIB.

Heartland has invested some $60,000 in Walker taking the governor's office ... and it's evidently no coincidence that there's a lot of focus on the state worker's pension funds.

By the way, Jim, Deuce looks as great as ever up there on the Watchdog banner.

Jim,

You said:
"If you want to lead the Democrats, then act like a Democrat. Americans don’t want Republican-lite. If they wanted a Republican they would have voted for one two years ago. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you will win the hearts of people who never supported you in the first place by caving in to their wishes. You could give them everything they wanted, and you still would not earn either their love, or their respect.

What’s worse, you’ve already lost the love of your base. Now you are killing their respect for you as well."
I couldn't agree with you more. Obama ran on a platform to find common ground. He reached his hand out across the aisle, unfortunately, every time he did , it came back filled with feces. It's time for Obama to act like a Democrat. You're absolutely right.

Christopher Thomas,
You not only sound mean, you are mean. When did those who have the least opportunity in this country become the boogie man for everything that's wrong? I know 20 year old kids, working 3 jobs, with degrees in Biology that can not find a decent paying job. Are you going to tell them that they should not be able to vote now, because they have nothing at stake? Shame on you. And shame on all you brain washed Tea Party Members.
Keep in mind. Tea Partys are for little girls and their imaginary friends.

Now that the papers have been filed and there is only Abele, a bunch of pols, and the lady who tried to run on the "not the white man's bitch" party, you'll have to choose.

I'm curious -- who do you like of the candidates so far or is it still too early to call?

Dimitrijevic is definitely the #2 behind Abele. If Abele wants it, it will be his to lose. She can't compete on the money, mental capacity or black book. Union support really does not mean much anymore as the membership of the unions do very little any longer to support candidates. I know this because I was involved in a campaign where we had lists of members we had to go and rally as they were identified as actually vocalizing their support for republicans during union meetings and had republican yard signs! This was almost a full time job. Unions are not what they were back in the 50's and 60's. Any dem who hangs their hat on labor will be very challenged.

Dimitrijevic has taken pages from the playbook of Tony Zielinski as well: tell people what they want to hear, grandstand on issues that sound populist, and find a way to draw attention by positioning yourself with the obvious knee-jerk issues.

I would suggest we get a candidate who is not a career politician - or aspiring to be one - and has some experience in the REAL world doing something other than getting themselves elected and peddling influence 24/7. The world does not need more Blagojevichs.

What is the fair share of the rich? Could you please define this bucause, to me, it means "anything we say it is." And while you are at it, please explain what is the fair share of the poor? Seems to me that they are allowed to vote, but have nothing at stake more than voting for the biggest handout for themselves while expecting everyone to have sympathy for how hard they have it. I'm sure I sound mean, but please consider this an honest philosophical question in need of a concrete answer.

Kathy,
That was a deceptive claim from a CRG member who didn't bother to look further into it. Had CRG done their homework they would have realized that Jim Sullivan (Sr) voted where he lives in Whitefish Bay and Jim Sullivan (Jr) voted where he lives in Wauwatosa.

Apparently the whole part about a son having the same first and last name as his father is too complicated of a concept for those folks.

To whom it may concern: Do not take anything Lori Lowling says seriously. She is out of her mind with politics of grandure that will never happen. She does not hate the smell of smoke as she is a smoker herself. This woman is unstable and not to be trusted in anyway shape or form, so to argue with her is futile as she cannot really see the distinction between reality of what is true and physical and the reality she has created in her mind which is purely fictional. Good Luck

As an FYI to Lori Lowling-MKELOVER, she is a pillpopping psycho whore who has no idea between reality and fiction. So I would take anything that was said by her with a grain of salt as she really has no concept except to degrade and demoralize everyone else before taking a nice and hard look at herself first. She would rather take her frustrations on others than admitting her personal faults. Heaven forbid!! Do what you need to do and but her in the looney bin file.. Best of luck...

I think it's funny that Doug or whoever wrote the facts about Douglas Cvetkovich forgot to mention his FIRST child, Matthew Cvetkovich, born in Savannah, GA, on July 12, 1993. He actually has THREE children, but I guess since he hasn't seen Matthew in over 10 years and fails to pay his child support ON TIME, it's easily forgotten. Make no mistake people. He is a typical politician, pretending to be something he is not. He's NOT the family man is he presenting to be. He was also given the chance to have Matthew come stay with him and finish out high school this year 2010, but declined, and Matthew saw this web site and is hurt that he is not even acknowledged by Doug.

If public funding is only 2% of NPR's total budget, what's the big deal in eliminating it. Federal government has to start cutting back somewhere and this is as good a place as any.

"How far or extensive he violated his contract is an item that is irrelevant." Not really. Nina Tottenberg regularly appears on other shows and has a history of stupid comments too.

Juan Williams just got kicked off the intellectual plantation--the idiological slavery of the left. He's better off for the experience. Interesting that you throw him in with Thomas. I'm glad that you are in a position to judge the validity of the minority experience.

hello my name is richie and i personally think its obscene the ALd. Zielinski is trying to ban the herb "K2 and A.I", because for the drug dealers and smugglers there is no age limit, they can and will sell to 10, 12 and 13 year old kids, at least at 18 you know what the consequences are for doing recreational herbs like K2. I have lived in a rough neighborhood and seen drug dealers standing on corners fighting, shooting each other, yelling at cars driving buy, and there is nothing the police can do about it. now what would be better a nice looking smoke shop selling to grown men of age, or a gangbanger on the street selling to little children and poisoning the community you decide. STOP THE ILLEGALIZATION OF K2

Thanks to the leadership of President Obama, Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid, the Democratic Party is facing the biggest defeat in midterm elections in the past 110 years, perhaps surpassing the modern record of a 74-seat gain set in 1922. They will also lose control of the Senate.

Republicans are now leading in 54 Democratic House districts. In 19 more, the incumbent congressman is under 50 percent and his GOP challenger is within five points. That makes 73 seats where victory is within easy grasp for the Republican Party. The only reason the list is not longer is that there are 160 Democratic House districts that were considered so strongly blue that there is no recent polling available.

There is no Democratic message. President Obama is heralding education -- an issue never mentioned on the campaign trail. Secretary of State Clinton is trying to restart the peace talks in the Middle East. Attorney General Holder is re-evaluating online national-security taps. And a hundred Democrats are scrambling about on their own trying to get reelected!

The Democratic campaigns they are waging are formulaic. They make no attempt to defend the administration, but run away from it where possible. They never mention the words stimulus, healthcare reform, card-check, GM takeover or cap-and-trade.

Instead, they are running almost exclusively negative ads.

You REAL democrats might want to know that the REAL democrat in the sheriff's race turned out to be a Republican. He voted for Bush in 2004, even going to a rally of his with a Bush t-shirt on...then in 2008 the REAL democrat endorsed John McCain. I'm guessing had Gwen Moore, Lena Taylor, and the Democrat Party known this previously, they may not have been so enthusiastic to endorse the REAL democrat. It's quite funny to see how the REAL democrat has pulled the wool over your collective liberal eyes.

Real Democrats in Milwaukee County need to know who the endorsed Democratic candidate for Sheriff is: Chris Moews. But the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has yet to mention that fact.

Active Democrats in the inner city need to know who the community's leading elected officials (like Congresswoman Gwen Moore and State Senator Lena Taylor) have endorsed: Chris Moews. But the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has yet to mention that fact.

I doubt that Clarke can win a Democratic primary when Democrats, not Republican crossovers, make up the electorate. But if Clarke does win, much of the blame should be laid at the door of a once-great newspaper, the Milwaukee Journal.

For anyone who believes the liberal system that is in place right now and the way it is moving in the near future is the correct position for us to go as a nation is a blind/deaf person. Second, Rush said "sounds like something Russ Feingold would say". I love the way we interpret this due to our blindness in the situation. It like saying, "Oprah in comparison acts like Ellen". Are we calling her gay? No, but in comparison their daily activities are similar - so why not compare them. Again in a time when small things are not needed to be taken out of proporation - We the public seem to waste time finding ways to complain about nothing -- instead of trying to figure out how to put the US ship back on course.

Nice editorial, but perhaps you should do a little more research before jumping to such conclusions. I would hardly call it "knee jerk legislation." Wisconsin is just following what more than 30 other U.S. States have done enacting similar laws to protect its citizens by banning texting while driving. Do you really think 30+ states would enact similar laws that can't be enforced? If an accident occurs and a party to the accident or a witness sees that the at-fault driver was texting at the time of the accident, attorneys routinely subpoena cellular telephone records to prove this. Similarly, if a law enforcement officer can see that a driver is texting it would not be hard to prove and back it up in court if contested especially with cameras mounted in squads.

The thing is that he is only interested in what affects him personally. So when he is in a near mid air collision a couple of weeks ago, all of a sudden he is interested in the topic.

Perhaps he would have interest in voting for unemployment compensation extensions if he lost his job.

Chris-

Wait a minute... WAIT a minute... "... while nothing could have prevented last weekend's flooding, separating the sewers in Milwaukee and Shorewood would help." No, Chris. You may not have your free lunch. There is no such thing as a free lunch. When you say, "... yes, this solution is very expensive", you clearly have no idea whatsoever just how expensive it would be, even piecemeal, as you suggest, and getting rid of those silly trollies wouldn't cover the cost of a fraction of it. Face it. This is the austerity you been asking for. You've got your federal income tax cuts for billionaires, you've got your capital gains tax cuts, your Republican heroes are trying to end the estate tax (that only applies to the richest 0.3 percent of the population- heck, all Rush had to do was to call it a "Death Tax" and you saw evil government prying Grannie's gold teeth out of her head, to tax her for dying- news flash, Chris- THERE IS NO "DEATH TAX"), no volatility reducing transaction tax on Wall St traders- now you want the city to do a billion dollar sewer fix (yeah, it's gonna cost that much) without Federal funding, and without raising your property taxes, without raising sales taxes? Infrastructure fixes for free are a free lunch.

67% of all corporations- domestic and foreign- that did business in the United States between 2001 and 2008 had at least one year in which they PAID NO INCOME TAX. What a deal. You believe in the Free Market- go ask them for some money to fix the sewers, out of civic responsibility, and the kindness of their hearts.

Those sewers are not going to be fixed. Austerity. You asked for it. Learn to love it.

You’ve got your federal income tax cuts for billionaires, you’ve got your capital gains tax cuts, your Republican heroes are trying to end the estate tax (that only applies to the richest 0.3 percent of the population- heck, all Rush had to do was to call it a “Death Tax” and you saw evil government prying Grannie’s gold teeth out of her head, to tax her for dying- news flash, Chris- THERE IS NO “DEATH TAX”), no volatility reducing transaction tax on Wall St traders- now you want the city to do a billion dollar sewer fix (yeah, it’s gonna cost that much) without Federal funding, and without raising your property taxes, without raising sales taxes? Infrastructure fixes for free are a free lunch.

67% of all corporations- domestic and foreign- that did business in the United States between 2001 and 2008 had at least one year in which they PAID NO INCOME TAX. What a deal. You believe in the Free Market- go ask them for some money to fix the sewers, out of civic responsibility, and the kindness of their hearts.

Those sewers are not going to be fixed. Austerity. You asked for it. Learn to love it.

First of all, Barrett ran on improving MMSD, but its pretty obvious from his track record he doesn't care. And while nothing could have prevented last weekend's flooding, separating the sewers in Milwaukee and Shorewood would help. Yes, this solution is very, very expensive, but this can't go on. If the money isn't there right now to do it all, begin with parts which could ease the burden on the whole system. This is a much greater priority than stupid trains. Secondly, replace the current MMSD board which no longer has the confidence of the community. Replace them with elected officials whose compensation is tied to performance. Thirdly, ask Barrett why he doesn't give a crap about the vital infrastructure of the city, only pointless trollies to cart around drunk rich white people.

And yes, I'm sick and tired of having to carry ruined crap out of basements of family and friends each time the three-year storm arrives. This is a first-world country.

The folks who demagogue this issue (Sykes, Belling, et al)DON'T really have a real answer. Oh yeah "Separate the sewers!" So we should dig up every mile of street in the city, all the while continuing to dump at the pre-TARP rate? Because that's what separating the sewer lines from storm water would require.

The dumping drives me nuts, too. But this is the real world. Resources are limited and we are forced to deal with decisions made long ago. The combined sewers were state of the art when Milwaukee was originally built up -- separated systems were an innovation that came decades too late.

Part of the trouble is that what is reported is the volume of waste water. The numbers after a significant rain event can boggle the mind. What really needs to be reported is the quantity of biological oxygen demand (BOD) -- the waste dumped after a big rain event should be VERY dilute.

BOD is the pollutant that we are concerned with. It is the part of the sewage that is consumed by aerobic micro-organisms -- too much BOD causes the microbes to deplete the oxygen dissolved in the water, creating putrid water.

If an industrial user or power plant dumped 2 billion gallons of water in the lake with 50 pounds of mercury (like BP wants to do in Indiana), the problem isn't the water, but the mercury. In the case of a waste water treatment system, the problem is BOD, not the water.

Through it all, MMSD has been frankly too stupid to coherently explain what's going on, so they deserve the abuse in a way.

The demagogues are really not interested in pollution -- they have political points to score. Once their guys are in office, you won't hear about dumping, at least not til the next election.

Nick:

I'd cut wages across the board 20%. Then all travel. Fish? Yeah, that's gone. Cut parks--sell them if need be. I'd keep fire, police, road services. Cut all office budgets by 20%. Nothing would happen. The argument that we are spending a lot of money, so we must always do so is B.S.

Jake,

Please do your homework, this is getting tiring. The 2009 audit, by inspectors via a consultant based out of Boston, showed problems with the O'Donnell Parking Garage. The County used the audit as a framework for addressing the violations. Please check this link. http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/97153569.html

Furthermore, if you really want Walker to own this, you have to provide evidence. You have to produce evidence that links negligence with the accident, and since there is no deferred maintenance on the property that is relevant to the falling facade, rhetoric is all you can rely on.

Aaron- No, SCOTT WALKER said that a 2009 audit said it was OK. It is in Scott Walker's interest to have people give him reports that say this, and in his interest to release this. Reality's liberal bias is not in Scott Walker's interest. This is hardly a complete, independent report like the 2004 one that was the last major assessment of that structure.

Either you're a paid liar to support him....or your a gullible simpleton, and that's why you support him (Walker's supporters run about 50-50 on this scale). Your excuses keep getting lamer, and you're not man enough to admit you are wrong....again You can keep flailing and trying to waste our bandwith all you want, but the rest of us know you OWN THIS.

"But a kid is dead because something fell from a parking garage that had maintenance deferred from it because of a County Executive that valued tax cuts and political poses over paying for needed things. Them’s the FACTS, and your lame attempt at deflection proves you have nothing to say. So OWN IT."

You don't have all the facts, Jake. There was no deferred maintenance on the parking garage. It was recently updated after a 2009 audit of the property. The fact that you don't know this means that the media has failed to do their job AKA TMJ4 negligent coverage.
