GOP Strategy includes Mandating Limits but not showing how to pay for them

TABOR, the tax freeze legislation that GOP leaders in Wisconsin want to adopt, isn’t the only scam legislation the GOP is pulling together. Nevermind that TABOR in Colorado has nearly crippled its schools and is crumbling its infrastructure.

Recently, several GOP lawmakers announced an intention for a gas tax holiday.

Still others suggested a sales tax holiday.

How are we going to pay for these tax cuts? Yet another shift of responsibility with an unfunded mandate to the already struggling local governments? It’s one thing to make cuts in your own budget but it is an entirely different thing to promote yourself as fiscally responsible while forcing others to do your dirty work.

Here’s the problem — when a budget is put together it is supposed to balance out revenues with expenses. If after the budget is crafted, revenues (in this case in the form of taxes) are eliminated, then there must be a corresponding cut in expenses.

These Republican lawmakers should do the responsible thing. If they plan on promoting this credit card style spending, they should outline pet projects and spending in their districts that will pay for the cuts. That way when they say they are fiscal conservatives, we can believe them.

Don’t hold your breath.

  1. Lawrence Stich:

    This is not hard.

    One simply reduces spending.

You are acquainted with the concept, no?

  2. Jim McGuigan:

    Show me the money.

What would you cut? Tax subsidies to big business? Ok, I’m with you. Healthcare for the poor? Uh, no.

That’s the problem — the GOP only wants to cut spending when it comes to helping the poor and middle class and if you look at the overall picture, spending for the poor and middle class is a small percentage of what could be cut.
