Referendum Activism: A Time for Courage

It’s time for the Milwaukee County Board to use the power of the referrendum to fix some of the problems the County Executive has created.

Questions like:
Do you consider continued borrowing from the future to pay for services needed today?
Do you support Scott Walker’s plan to borrow $27 million to be paid back with interest over 5 years instead of paying for current responsibilities with todays dollars?
Do you approve of Scott Walker’s plan which uses the 1/2 cent sales tax for operating expenses instead of its original intention of paying off debt for county infrastructure?

Placing these measures on the ballot during every single election between now and 2008 will educate the public about what’s going on. It would force a public discussion which has been lacking.

Politically it’s not a simple task. Supervisors would have to hold together and vote to override the Execs veto. They would have to realize that Walker will repeat his vindictive actions of last campaign season and actively oppose anyone who did not agree to march in lock step with his agenda.

Only political courage can make that happen. Supervisors who oppose Walker will have a fight on their hands in their next election, but if they’re not willing to take that fight, should they even be in office?
