Wisconsin’s New Poll Tax Proposal
It’s a call for voter ID, but in reality, it amounts to a poll tax.
We’re not unique. After Georgia politicians passed a voter ID bill they eliminated all the DMV sites in Atlanta, making it more difficult for African Americans (a traditional democratic base) to acquire the required ID’s. Those not owning a car were out of luck unless they paid for an expensive cab ride. The Georgia courts threw out the voter ID bill because they deemed that it amounted to a poll tax and disenfranchised an entire group of potential voters.
Now there’s talk in Wisconsin of eliminating some of the DMV sites in Milwaukee County. Never mind that half hour to hour waits are common in these sites — the GOP believes that if they offer free ID’s to residents that they’ll have fulfilled the letter of the law. After they get their photo ID bill passed, they’ll eliminate access to those ID’s in traditionally democratic areas.
The reality is that it’s thinly veiled racism.
