A Full Plate of Substance - Dems showed Differences at Convention
Both Russ Feingold and Jim Doyle wowed delegates. Bold statements stood out. Doyle plans to make sure EVERY child in Wisconsin is covered by health insurance. Feingold wants us out of Iraq by the end of THIS year. Both plans will get GOP naysayers to attack them but both of these men understand something many other dems have still failed to understand — having a vision and showing a willingness to fight for it is something the public understands. Doyle's "because it's the right thing to do" showed people a core democratic value that speaks to what dems are, or at least should be, all about. Republican-lite candidates like Hillary Clinton aren't going to get the troops motivated. Doyle's (Bill) Clintonesque approach on friday night was remiscent of the Clinton speeches that spoke about HOPE. While Doyle didn't grow up in a town called Hope, he did appeal to the same feelings — that we can do more than just despair that we have so many problems; that we can work together to make good things happen but, as Doyle pointed out, there will sometimes have to be sacrifices. It is also the dems who have shown fiscal responsibility. Speakers reminded us that it was Democratic President Bill Clinton who inherited a HUGE deficit from President George Bush (Sr.) and turned it into a record surplus. Governor Doyle inherited a 3+ BILLION DOLLAR deficit from Republican Governors Scott McCallum and Tommy Thompson and managed to balance the budget. Doyle also questioned the foolishness of his GOP predecessors in having several airplanes and pointed out that the state ought not serve as a mini airline. In many ways, if you look at Doyle's vision, it is similar to President Clinton's. Doyle treated delegates to a full plate of substance Friday night.
