Bill Clinton for Secretary of State
No, the position isn't open but can you imagine the power these United States would wield if Bill Clinton were the Secretary of State?
Wow.
We would have immediate credibility in the UN. The EU would greet us as equals. Countries which have turned their backs on us even as they have thought we have turned our backs on them, would come back to the table.
We could get out of Iraq and not be seen as the country that chose to run when the going got tough.
We would have immediate respect from world leaders.
Could it happen now? Sure. Is it likely that President George W. Bush would bring on a democrat? No. It is highly unlikely. As long as Condoleezza Rice wants the job she'll keep it.
But just imagine the possibilities.

I just spat coffee all over my computer screen.
Credibility at the UN? Why would we want credibility at a place that never had credibility to begin with?
But I guess you’re right about one thing, if Clinton was Sec of State, we could return to a period of terrorist appeasement such that other suppliers/quiet supporters of terrorism would like us again. Makes sense. I like winning popularity contests.
Jim:
Bill Clinton would make a terrible Secretary of State. I don’t understand how appointing him to this position would grant us immediate credibility in the UN. Cmpliance, blind compliance at that, is what the UN wants. We’re talking about an organization that has done painfully little to further mankind. And if you wanted to look at its few marginal successes–aids, Bosnia, Gulf War One–you’d have to admit that none of these would have been possible were it not for the US. They can’t do more than pass resolutions–big deal. I could see Clinton there, sending more peace keepers somewhere with orders not to shoot or intervene (hopefully just not rape) Look to Somolia to see his stalwart courage.
As far as the EU goes, the idea of equality is laughable too. Let the EU stand up for itself, train an army, and defend its own boarders. Economic problems aside, the EU is impotence defined. Do you want us to be lowered to that status too? How could we be equals with such an inferior organization?
Finally, which of those countries which turned their back on us is such a bastion of virtue and competence and ability that we should be in a hurry to get them back? France? Germany?
What would Bill Clinton say to any of these people that would make such a big difference? Whatever you want to say about Bush, we all know for sure that Clinton has looked into the camera and lied to the American people–a clear example of his desire for power at any cost. The world community would know he wants nothing more than to be well thought-of, and they would know how to play him.
Rice has been an excellent Secretary of State. She is tough and trustworthy.
Clinton would make a fantastic Secretary of State. I don’t know what the previous two posters are talking about. This would, in fact, bring states back to the table and raise our image throughout the world. (I just read that there is a law prohibiting family members from being placed in the cabinet…After JFK and RK…who weren’t such a bad combo). So voting for Hillary isn’t necessarily a vote for Bill in a cabinet position (but what a waste if he weren’t).
Point of fact: Rice is a joke as a Sec. of State. I’d like that poster to name some accomplishments to prove that she’s been anything other than a White House lackey. Tough and trustworthy are good traits in a dog, but I’d rather have shrewd and supreme negotiating skills in a Sec. of State. I don’t know that more damage has ever been done to our image world-wide than it has with Condi Rice.
