Midwest Airlines problems self generated
Midwest Airlines has had problems for years but it all seems to be related to two people. CEO Tim Hoeksema and VP Carol Skornika have been at the help of the Milwaukee based airline and they made some severely bad decisions that led up to the current attempt by Airtran to take over the airline.
Will their stock price (MEH) ever recover to its once high price of nearly $40 a share? That's doubtful but it was undervalued when it was at $2 per share. Unfortunately it's probably overvalued now at $11 a share. It is trading at an extremely low volume.
Just to give you a little background — it was Hoeksema and Skornika who made the decision to cut their quality department a few years ago and with it, the best care in the air reputation they had earned. Instead of continuing to WOW fliers with service, they used some of their extra cash, or more specifically their stockholders cash, to get involved in politics. Skornika had worked under former Republican Governor Tommy Thompson and when she joined Hoeksema, they started funneling money to republicans and bashing democrats.
So if you're looking for a good way to anger some of your customers, look to the Hoeksema-Skornika model of destroying a solid business.
