Wisconsin Congressman Tom Petri was denied the honor of ranking member on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.  His spokesman said he was "too independent and too much of a maverick."

Yeah, when I think Tom Petri I think "maverick".

Only in politics can one get away with calling themselves a maverick when they vote with their party leader (in this case George W. Bush) almost all of the time.
