Political Loofa: Dems shed dead skin with McKinney and Lieberman
Republicans are rejoicing over the dems dumping of Joe Lieberman (D-CT) but they're staying pretty quiet about the dem dumping of Cynthia McKinney (D-GA), the arrogant Congresswoman who slapped a capitol cop for stopping her from entering the capitol without showing ID.
Dems should be rejoicing over both ousters as voters sent a strong message that the sensible center is where voters are headed this fall.
To call Joe Lieberman a moderate dem was ridiculous. Lieberman was in the hip pocket of President George W. Bush and went so far as to say that there wasn't an inch of difference between him and the president. Fortunately, Ned Lamont stripped Lieberman of the dem nomination. While it is possible that Lieberman's promised bid to run as an independent will hurt Lamont's chances of winning in the general, the spotlight has been stripped away from Lieberman by democratic voters willing to police their own. If a democrat wants to vote and advocate for all things republican, they should do the honest thing and switch parties. Lieberman lacked that honesty and voters called him on it.
Dumping Cynthia McKinney showed democrats don't have an interest in supporting an arrogant person regardless of whether that person may (or may not) support some of their own views. Hats off to Georgia democrats who said "no" to McKinney's disdain for law enforcement. Democrats are now and have always been about shared community values and respect. When McKinney showed she didn't share those values, voters appropriately called her on it.
Both Lieberman and McKinney's ouster are positives for democrats this fall. Both show that democrats aren't willing to put up with the nonsense that has been happening in Washington and both instances show democrats are saying no to arrogance.
Over the past several decades Americans have seen the politics of our nation change as we have made a dramatic shift to the right. People who were once considered to be conservative democrats are now called liberal democrats. It will be interesting to see how the fall elections unfold and to see if any new lessons will be learned come November.
