Weishan, McCue emerging as New Leaders in Milwaukee County

In an unlikely turn of events, a CRG backed candidate has dared to stand up to another CRG politician.  Milwaukee County Supervisor Ryan McCue spoke out against County Executive Scott Walker's misguided vetoes.  Here's what he had to say during the veto override session:

The County Board and the County Executive agree on 99.9 percent of the budget and for the county exec to veto the entire budget is irresponsible.

The county board restored parks, public safety, veteran services and for people with disabilities.

To cut veterans services at a time when his (Scott Walker's) Director of Veteran Affairs is serving in Iraq is wrong.

To cut the dept on disabilities is wrong.

Walker vetoes the senior centers.  He vetoed the buses.

It's overdue that the county executive show leadership on his budget.

It's especially noteworthy that McCue, unlike Walker, is experiencing what it is like to govern.  Governing is a lot more difficult than spouting rhetoric — a skill that Walker has mastered.

County Supervisor John Weishan, who Walker actively worked to defeat in his last election, had this to say:

I would remind him (Walker) that we're not playing games on some sandlot somewhere where there are do overs.

The choices we made were about safety.

It's not something you can play games with.

Our decisions protect real people in real ways.

I find it distasteful that he would turn this into (an opportunity for) grandstanding.

It looks like we're seeing some real leadership emerging on the County Board.  Also of note, Supervisor Lynne DeBruin who has carried water for Walker since 2002, was also critical of Walker's budgeting as well as his veto.  Time will tell if this is just a hiccup of responsibility for DeBruin or if she is finally returning to her roots.
