Citizen Journalist — I like the sound of that

NPR ran a story today about Josh Wolf, a video blogger who was tossed in jail for not testifying about the circumstances at an event he videotaped.

Apparently the Supreme Court is treating him, for all practical purposes, as a journalist. They’ve even given him the title “citizen journalist”.

Consider if journalism was turned on its head — if the blog of a person was, in a sense, a resume for a job. What better way could a newspaper get a feel for how someone will write? What better pool could a newspaper pull from?

Think about all of the similarities. They write stories. We write stories. They check facts. We check facts. They interview people for stories. We interview people for stories. They’re asked to keep confidential sources. We’re asked to keep confidential sources. They’re thrown in jail when they refuse to give out the names of those sources. Now we’re thrown in jail when we refuse to give out the names of sources.

In fact, Wolf has been incarcerated for longer than any other journalist.

Once again, the lines have been blurred between journalist and blogger.
