Mmmm Beer: Sprecher introduces Gluten Free Beer
It’s not exactly brewed according to Rhineheitsgebot (the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516 which requires only malt, hops, water and yeast be used) but Glendale’s Sprecher Brewery now has an option for celiacs — people who cannot tolerate gluten in their diet.
According to Sprecher, brewmaster Craig Burge formulated the recipe for their African Shakparo style ale which, instead of malt contains sorghum and millet as its fermentables.
Sprecher released a statement saying that it’s shakparo ale is “an unfiltered, light, crisp ale with a cider or fruit profile and a dry vinous aftertaste, it is best characterized as an easy drinking or session beer perfect for summer gatherings.”
Yes, I miss giving tours at Sprecher.

They’re copying Lakefront, which has done a ton of business with their gluten free beer. So much so that they have to outsource production to Point. I think the stuff tastes bad, but if you can’t drink any other kind of beer…
Shakparo is not a copy of Lakefront’s glute-free offering. They are entirely different beers. I much prefer Srpecher’s offering. I am not a big fan of Lakefront’s New Grist, however I think Sprecher’s Shakparo is outstanding.
