Number of Times a QB is Sacked

I won’t claim to be a big football fan but sometimes the things that come out of sportscasters mouths are just stupid.

Why, oh why, would anyone compare the number of times that 43 year old Vinnie Testaverde has been sacked with the number of times that the much younger Peyton Manning has been sacked? Testaverde has played more than twice as long as Manning. Besides, being sacked isn’t so much a reflection of a lousy Quarterback as much as it is a reflection of an ineffective offensive line. Is there some impact as to whether or not a QB can scramble and his ability to stay in the pocket? Of course, but more important is whether the line held that pocket.

I feel more stupid for having seen those statistics.

There are a few times in pro football where I’ve looked at things that come out of sportscasters mouths and said to myself “huh”? Take the time that John Madden was the sportscaster during a Green Bay Packer game a couple of years ago and the cameras zoomed in one of the heavier defensive players who was setting his position on the line. Madden used his line drawing thing (no, I don’t know what they’re called) to circle the players butt and said “look at the rectum on that guy”. Rectum? Rectum? Since when can you see the internal lower digestive guts of a person through their uniform pants?

Madden is an idiot.
