Jim,
As is often, often, often repeated to me by my uber-conservative relatives, “America is a Christian nation, founded on Christian principles.”

But I often find that this only relates to legislating condemnation on something or someone(gay marriage), and not on legislating charity or kindness. It doesn’t really add up.

Additionally, any talk of burning in hell is conspicuous because there is no hard and fast line on how you come to Jesus, and therefore, no real way to determine who is “in” and who is “out” (the age old question of the church).

Interesting take on the scriptures, but the quotes suggest the virtue of private acts of charity, not the vanity of ordering others to give through the tax code. I’m sure you are interested in acts of charity–as many of us are–but don’t confuse the individual works of kindness with the tax and social policies of the left. Virtue comes from sacrafice, not ordering others to sacrafice to fulfill your sense of virtue.
