Thank You Tony Snow: Our concerns about Bush politicizing 9/11 are laid to rest

by Steve Hawley

I was really happy to hear from the White House over & over yesterday that Bush's 9/11 speech was not going to be political.

I was really happy to hear that because I thought about how important it would be for the leader of our country to set aside agendas just for a moment, to simply honor the fallen & remember the 5-year anniversary of such a tragic event in unity, as Americans.

I thought about how incredibly important it should be for our president to simply honor the family members, friends & co-workers who lost loved ones that day & leave agendas for another day. After all, what kind of man could even fathom the thought of using the memory of the death of 3,000 innocent Americans as political pawns & catalysts? That would be utterly tasteless.

So, needless to say, I was so relieved to hear Tony Snow this morning lay my outrageous concerns to rest. Now, I feel so guilty for even thinking of it.

Here are a few of my favorite excerpts from last night's non-political, honorary speech in remembrance to the victims of 9/11:

"If we do not defeat these enemies now, we will leave our children to face a Middle East overrun by terrorist states and radical dictators armed with nuclear weapons. We are in a war that will set the course for this new century and determine the destiny of millions across the world."

"On September the 11th, we learned that America must confront threats before they reach our shores."  …

"I am often asked why we're in Iraq when Saddam Hussein was not responsible for the 9/11 attacks. The answer is that the regime of Saddam Hussein was a clear threat. My administration, the Congress and the United Nations saw the threat. And, after 9/11, Saddam's regime posed a risk that the world could not afford to take. The world is safer because Saddam Hussein is no longer in power."

"Whatever mistakes have been made in Iraq, the worst mistake would be to think that if we pulled out, the terrorists would leave us alone. They will not leave us alone."

"We are now in the early hours of this struggle between tyranny and freedom."

    Get over it Jim.

Some of us on the other side of the fence lost friends and busines associates we were accustomed to talking to on a daily basis on 9/11.

Fess-up if you can say the same. I’m still pissed.

Try to justify for the rest of us why a pathetic bunch of 5th century misogonistic zealots deserve to live in modern times?

    Defend it.

    Turkeyhunter,

The point is that Bush used the 9/11 tragedy to again justify the Iraq war, which is the number 1 issue in the mid-term elections this fall. He politicized the tragedy, which he has done all along. When Bush was roundly criticized in Congress today for the speech, the Republican Speaker of the House questioned the patriotism of the critics — a tactic the Bush administration has resorted to time and time again.

C’mon, it was all over the news today, so no need to jump on Jim — in fact, he didn’t even write this post. Steve Hawley did.

  3. Turkeyhunter:

    Apologies to Jim.

Still doesn’t change my views however.

Does anyone want to furnish me a rationale for why a pathetic bunch of 5th century misogonistic zealots deserve to live in modern times?

  4. Jim McGuigan:

    Turkey,

For future reference, I’m all about Wisconsin politics — I rarely pen columns on the national issues unless there is a local connection.

Wow, Saddam Hussein might be put to death in the next 2 days. That is some heavy stuff!
