Jesus May Have the Edge in McGee Recall
Jesus just might have a shot to win the McGee recall election Tuesday.
As I write it is Sunday afternoon, two days before the vote. I’m one of two registered voters at a house just off Holton Street on the eastern end of the 6th Aldermanic District. There are seven challengers and Ald. Michael McGee, Jr. vying for a shot at a head-to-head run off to be our alderman. Every vote will count in this low turnout race, judging by past spring elections. There are only a few thousand votes out there. It’s the kind of race where the candidate who knocks on the most doors, talks to the most people and hangs the most door-lit would be tough to beat.
Two days before the election and it is raining, but we’re waiting nonetheless for the happy sound of grassroots politics: footsteps on the porch, lit being dropped in the door, or better still, a knock on the door from a candidate asking for our votes. In this part of the 6th District, all’s quiet.
Two days out and here’s how the candidates stack up in terms of campaign activity at our house:
Ald. Michael McGee, Jr. – 1
Jesus Christ – 1
Campaign volunteers for Jesus came by the other day and dropped some lit at the door, asking us to join in remembering “the greatest man who ever lived†on the anniversary of his death, Monday, April 2. This was rubber-banded to the doorknob, a sure sign that volunteers for Jesus were out in the neighborhoods, working the grassroots. McGee hasn’t been on the block. We received a mass mailer from the alderman a couple of days ago. It’s glossy, the size of a postcard, and tells us he is “Fighting for Justice God’s Wayâ€.
Who would you vote for, Jesus as a write-in or Michael McGee, Jr.? We just might sit this one out.

I’m recommending Una. But I don’t live there, so you don’t have to trust me.
Honestly, knowing family tradition, I’m surprised we don’t already see burning tires or “whitey sucks” picket signs. My money is on a rock from the lakefront.
Reader Dan Knauss dropped this in the Watchdog “contact” box. — Thanks Dan
Lit drop for mr. morgan:
I’m one of Una’s neighbors. Want to know why I’m voting for her?
Stuff from her campaign literature:
The Journal-Sentinel has endorsed Una Van Duvall, and so has the Human Rights League. Both the Journal and HRL cite Van Duvall’s extensive experience in community and economic development.
A Clear Vision. A Clear Record. A Clear Choice.
A Clear Choice
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has joined the many people and organizations endorsing UNA VAN DUVALL as the clear choice to move the 6th District forward.

“Her experience in city government and as a community activist, combined with her skills as a consensus builder, gives Van Duvall the best chance of the eight
candidates in the field to get things done.â€

It should be noted that only McGee has enough money to do voter contact with a high quality mailer. But with so many candidates in the race, I’m surprised that any corner of the district, especially our little stretch that is lined with voters, isn’t being busked for votes.
We’re not ready to endorse here at Watchdog, but Una seems to have strong support out of Brewer’s Hill.
Vianna Jordan certainly deserves consideration. After all, she made this recall possibile.
Josephine Morris, I might add, is wonderful, and has been a persistent volunteer advocate for MPS kids.
As you all know - Jesus always gets my vote!
